I did hear again from Mr. Black. He was elated. He said everything was back to normal. No diarrhea, and the bats were strong enough to have no trouble flying around now. When I asked about him and how he was managing the new, careful routine, he said, “Great.” He told me that he’d thought about what I said and added that he was freeing his beloved insectivores. I was delighted to hear that and told him so.

Then he added, “And I think I’ll get some fruit-eating bats, flying foxes. I think fruit will be easier than worms. Besides, I like their scientific name. Pteropus vampyrus.”
